Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sitemap index and a standard sitemap?
A standard sitemap (<urlset>) contains direct links to individual pages, articles, or resources on your website. A sitemap index (<sitemapindex>) acts as a directory that points to other standard sitemap files. This is commonly used for very large websites to bypass the standard limit of 50,000 URLs per single sitemap file. The Sitemap Visualizer seamlessly detects and supports both formats.
Why does my sitemap not show Priority or Change Frequency?
The tags for <priority> and <changefreq> are optional according to the standard sitemap protocol. If your Content Management System (CMS) or sitemap generation tool does not include them, the visualizer will display a placeholder or empty value for these columns. Importantly, many modern search engines, including Google, largely ignore these tags in favor of their own crawling algorithms, placing much more weight on the <lastmod> tag.
Does the tool cache my sitemap data?
No, the Sitemap Visualizer performs a live, real-time fetch every time you submit a URL. This guarantees that you are viewing the most up-to-date version of your sitemap exactly as a search engine crawler would see it at that very moment.
What causes a "Failed to fetch sitemap" or "Invalid XML format" error?
A "Failed to fetch" error typically occurs if the URL is unreachable, blocked by a firewall, returns a 404 Not Found, or times out. An "Invalid XML format" error happens if the server returns an HTML page instead of raw XML, or if the XML syntax is broken (e.g., missing closing tags). Ensure you are providing the direct link to the .xml file.
Can I visualize huge sitemaps?
The tool is designed to handle standard sitemap sizes efficiently. However, processing exceptionally massive sitemaps with tens of thousands of URLs may result in slower rendering times or hit server execution limits. If your site has a massive structure, we recommend using sitemap indexes to split the URLs into smaller, more manageable chunks.
